Annie Awards Update:
The International Animated Film Society, ASIFA-Hollywood, announced that Patrick Warburton will host of its 41st Annie Awards, which will be held Feb. 1 at UCLA’s Royce Hall. Warburton’s credits include Seinfeld, and voice acting on Family Guy, as well as DreamWorks Animation’s upcoming Mr. Peabody & Sherman and Disney’s Planes 2.
Panavision introduced a new line of Primo lenses, the Primo V series, for high-resolution digital cameras. “Cinematographers tell us that the hyper-sharp sensors in today’s digital cameras can result in images that are harsh and lack personality,” said Panavision’s vp of optical engineering Dan Sasaki in a statement. “The Primo V lenses bring the smooth, organic flavor of Primo lenses to the high fidelity digital image. Our philosophy is to take what cinematographers love about the Primos, and update them for the digital world.” The lenses are compatible with digital cameras equipped with PL or Panavision 35 mount systems. A set includes 14.5, 17.5, 21, 27, 35, 40, 50, 75, and 100mm focal lengths.
Blackmagic Design released Blackmagic Camera 1.5 software, a free update that adds 12-bit Log CinemaDNG RAW recording to the company’s Pocket Cinema Camera. Blackmagic noted that with this update, cinematographers have the choice of recording CinemaDNG RAW or ProRes 422 (HQ) in video or film mode.
Video Equipment Rentals and Fletcher Chicago reached an agreement to bring Fletcher’s 16mm, 35mm and digital camera rental division into VER’s cinema division, forming a new entity that will have a separate identity and dedicated staff. It will use Fletcher’s existing Chicago and New Orleans locations; Fletcher Chicago’s Sports Division remains unchanged and will continue to operate their downtown location until the spring when they relocate to the western suburbs.
Postproduction sound company Todd-Soundelux has extended lease terms by 10 years for two of the company’s locations: Todd-AO facility in Hollywood and Pacific Ocean Post facility in Santa Monica. The company said it plans to make a “significant investment in physical and technical upgrades” at both facilities. The Hollywood location has five mixing stages, two ADR stages, transfer facilities, and production offices and editorial rooms. POP in Santa Monica has eleven mixing stages, seven voice-over booths and an ADR/Foley stage.
