RealD, SGO, Aspera and Grass Valley will receive the Hollywood Professional Association’s Engineering Excellence Awards during the 11th annual HPA Awards on Nov. 17 at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles.
SGO will be recognized for its Mistika color grading and mastering system for postproduction, which can accommodate high resolution, high frame rates and high dynamic range for 2D or 3D. Clients include Peter Jackson’s Park Road Post, which selected it to finish the Hobbit trilogy, and J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions, which recently used it on Star Trek Beyond.
RealD will be honored for its Ultimate Screen, a screen for movie theaters designed to evenly distribute light while reducing or eliminated a hot spot that can form in the center of a screen for 2D or 3D digital cinema projection.
Aspera will be honored for its widely used FASP Stream application that enables live-streaming of broadcast-quality video globally over commodity internet networks, and Grass Valley was selected on the strength of its GV Node real-time IP processing and edge routing platform, a technology designed to address various technical challenges in today’s broadcast data centers.
“The Engineering Excellence entries often go on to have significant impact on how we work,” EFILM’s Joachim Zell, who chairs the Engineering Excellence Awards, said Thursday in a statement.
