Lenny Kravitz scored a role in one of the hottest movie adaptations of late — The Hunger Games — but says that before he was cast in the movie, he had no clue what the book trilogy upon which it’s based was about.
“I hadn’t read the book yet, so I didn’t know what it was,” Kravitz told Rolling Stone.
But consider him now one of the millions of fans who have gobbled up Suzanne Collins’ best sellers.
“I go out and get the book, read it — oh, wow,” he said, adding that he’s halfway through Catching Fire, the second book.
Kravitz is set to play Cinna, a stylist who becomes a crucial ally to Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) as she participates in the Hunger Games, which sees 24 teenagers fight to the death, with one victor.
“I’m really excited to be playing Cinna,” he said. “Reading the book, I’m seeing everything — the Capitol, the arena, all this stuff. This world is going to be incredible.”
Kravitz is set to release his next album, Black and White America, on Aug. 30. But the actor-singer, who received praise for his role in 2009’s Precious, says he wants to keep acting and is being choosy about his roles.
“I’m not just trying to push my career forward to push it forward,” he says. “I want to do the right things. Precious was a great way to start, really low-key, and now this. We’ll see where it goes from here.”
