Mr. Holmes reteams Condon and McKellen, who worked together on the Oscar winner Gods and Monsters. The British film, previously titled A Slight Trick of the Mind, is a new take on the iconic detective and bowed in Berlin to warm reviews. Set in 1947, an aging Holmes returns from a journey to Japan, where, in search of a rare plant with powerful restorative qualities, he saw firsthand the devastation of nuclear warfare.
Now facing the end of his days with only the company of his housekeeper (Linney) and her young son, Holmes grapples with the fading powers of his mind as he searches for answers to the mysteries of life and love before it’s too late.
Mr. Holmes is based on Mitch Cullin‘s novel A Slight Trick of the Mind. Jeffrey Hatcher wrote the adapted script.
Anne Carey (The American), Iain Canning and Emile Sherman, producers of Oscar winner The King’s Speech, are producing.
