IDW has a history of publishing comics based on big-name franchises — this is a company with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Star Trek, Popeye and 24 on its books, after all. Nonetheless, its latest signing is a genuine pop-culture phenomenon. Are you ready for Angry Birds comics?
The new comics, created in partnership with Angry Birds owners Rovio, extend the world of the slingshot-centric avian beasts beyond what we’ve seen already in the multiple incarnations of the game, animated series and attendant merchandise, with writers Paul Tobin and Jeff Parker leading the charge to tell stories of Red, Chuck, Bomb, Stella, Matilda and others. (Yes, they have names.)
STORY: Rovio Announces Second Season of ‘Angry Birds Toons’ Series
“We’re very happy to be in business with Rovio on Angry Birds comics,” said IDW’s chief creative officer and editor-in-chief, Chris Ryall. “Rovio has taken what was once a captivating game and built it into an interesting world filled with interesting and, uh, feathered characters who will make a perfect addition to our growing line of fun, all-ages comics.”
More details about the partnership and the Angry Birds comics will be released over the next few months, ahead of their official launch in June.
