The Force is larger than you might have expected in this one. During a speech at Goldman Sachs’ annual Communacopia Conference, IMAX chief executive officer Richard Gelfond dropped the surprising tidbit that the next Star Wars movie may be filmed, in part, in IMAX format.
Talking about the increase in movies being shot in IMAX format (and screen ratio), Gelfond said “We are talking to J.J. Abrams [just] now about the next Star Wars being used with partly IMAX cameras.” (Other movies being shot in IMAX, he added, included Christopher Nolan‘s Interstellar and Michael Bay‘s Transformers: Age of Extinction).

Abrams is no stranger to shooting in IMAX — parts of Star Trek Into Darkness were shot in that format — but Star Wars has, until now, been shot in CinemaScope and for some reason — nostalgia? tradition? phobia of oversize screens? — the idea of a Star Wars movie in any other ratio just seems… wrong, somehow. It’s true that each new Star Wars movie has made technological steps forward, or at least in some particular direction, depending on your feelings about the CGI backgrounds of George Lucas‘ prequel trilogy, so a step into IMAX wouldn’t be that out of character, but still…
