Isabelle Huppert took home the Golden Globe for best performance by an actress in a motion picture, drama, for her role in the French film Elle on Sunday night.
The actress beat out Amy Adams in Arrival, Jessica Chastain in Miss Sloane, Ruth Negga in Loving and Natalie Portman in Jackie.
This is the foreign film’s second win of the night, with another Golden Globe for best foreign film. The controversial motion picture was directed by Paul Verhoeven, who has directed such films as Robocop and Basic Instinct.
Verhoeven told THR backstage at the show, “What I said in my speech is that I’m amazed because the movie is a bit controversial. Some people have been angry. There have been a lot of positive reviews. You have a character, played by Isabelle Huppert, who is in some ways not inviting you to sympathize with her. I think that’s perhaps part of the reason people liked it. Because it was innovative in that way and not trying to be moral in any way.”
Jimmy Fallon hosted the 74th annual Golden Globe Awards, which took place at the Beverly Hilton on Jan. 8.
