Issa Rae, the star and creator of HBO series Insecure, will star opposite Bill Hader in Empress of Serenity.
The Good Universe and Mr. Mudd project will be helmed by Jesse Andrews in his directorial debut and based on his original script. Andrews is the author and screenwriter behind Me and Earl and the Dying Girl.
Empress of Serenity centers on a man (Hader) whose elaborate plan to win back his ex-wife is upended when he is guilted into a monthlong cruise with his widowed father. Rae will play Michelle, a reclusive kindred spirit in the cabin next door who becomes both aid and obstacle to Sheldon’s plan.
Stephen Chbosky will produce the pic alongside Mr. Mudd’s Lianne Halfon and Russell Smith. Nathan Kahane and Joe Drake of Good Universe will executive produce alongside Mr. Mudd’s John Malkovich. Erin Westerman is overseeing for Good Universe. Production is scheduled for an August start date.
Rae was nominated for a Golden Globe for her series Insecure, which she created, wrote, produced and starred in. She first received mainstream attention from her award-winning web series, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl. Her first book, a collection of essays under the same title, is a New York Times best-seller. Rae is repped by UTA, 3 Arts Entertainment and Hansen, Jacobson.
