Even added together, the ages of Feb. 27 Oscar broadcast hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway (32 and 28) will be younger than plenty of Oscar voters, and if past hosts Steve Martin and Billy Crystal had come back to host it together, their act could’ve been called 127 Years.
Nobody seems anything but delighted by the new-blood infusion, and the duo’s improv skills seem just what the show needs.
And so what if Franco is a frontrunner for best actor for 127 Hours and Hathaway, who Jeff Wells said “sounds like the first strong contender for a 2010 best actress Oscar” in August, no longer sounds strong at all? The woman is fast and funny on her feet, as proven by the brutal boot camp of SNL, and so is Franco.
In a race that was starting to feel predictable, this shakeup is just what everyone needed.
