Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn is continuing to keep up his horror chops.
Gunn will produce a new horror project to be helmed by David Yarovesky, the director of the 2015 film The Hive. He is a longtime collaborator of Gunn’s (Guardians fans will undoubtedly have seen his viral music video “Guardians Inferno,” starring David Hasselhoff). The as-yet untitled film will be a family affair, with Gunn’s brother Brian Gunn and cousin Mark Gunn writing the script.
The H Collective is financing the project and is producing with James Gunn and his shingle Troll Court Entertainment. Executive producers include Brian and Mark Gunn, Dan Clifton and The H Collective’s Nic Crawley.
James Gunn is currently at work on a script for Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the follow-up to this summer’s Vol. 2, which earned critical acclaim and $863 million worldwide. This new project is a nice way for the filmmaker to explore his passion for horror when his mind isn’t on the cosmic side of the Marvel galaxy. His 2006 horror feature Slither has become a cult favorite, while earlier this year Gunn released The Belko Experiment, which he wrote and produced. It went on to earn $10 million on a $5 million budget.
In addition to working together on the new film, James and Brian Gunn are known for their collaboration on the web parody series, PG PORN, which has notched more than 100 million views. Their brother Sean Gunn, who appears as Kraglin in the Guardians movies, has also been involved in the series. Meanwhile, Brian and Mark Gunn work as a screenwriting duo and are known for 2008’s Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. The pair are also teaming with James Gunn for Amazon’s Starsky & Hutch reboot.
Production on the new horror project is expected to begin in the spring. James Gunn and Yarovesky are repped by UTA. Brian and Mark Gunn are repped by ICM.
