Grammy nominated singer-songwriter Janelle Monae and James Bond actress Naomie Harris, as well as actors Andre Holland and Mahershala Ali, have joined the cast of Moonlight.
A24 is fully financing the film from Brad Pitt‘s Plan B Entertainment (12 Years a Slave). Adele Romanski is also producing.
Barry Jenkins is directing Moonlight, which follows the story of a young man who comes of age during “War on Drugs”-era Miami. The film was adapted by Jenkins from the play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue by Tarell McCraney, and is currently shooting in Miami.
The film marks Monae’s big screen debut.
Harris, who most recently starred in the Jake Gyllenhaal boxing drama Southpaw, will next been seen in Spectre, the latest installment in the James Bond franchise, which hits theaters on Nov. 6.
Additionally, after an open casting call to local Miami school and colleges, the filmmakers added newcomers Alex R. Hibbert and Jaden Piner to Moonlight cast.
A24 is planning a fall 2016 theatrical release.
Monae is repped by WME and Paradigm. Harris is repped by WME, Untitled Entertainment and Ziffren Bittenham. Ali is repped by WME, Anonymous Content and Sloane & Offer. Holland is repped by CAA and Brookside Artist Management.
