TOKYO — Frozen spent its 12th weekend atop the Japanese box office with its total theatrical revenue in the country now amounting to $208 million (?21.2 billion). This makes the Walt Disney animated hit the third highest-grossing film in Japan’s history.
X-Men: Days of Future Past had a solid $2.7 million (?272 million) opening weekend from 648 screens, putting it in second place. But Japan’s love for Frozen apparently knows no bounds. The Disney smash actually grew its box office by 8 percent over the previous weekend to $7.4 million (?759 million), pushing its total ticket sales to 16.73 million in Japan.

Monsterz, a remake of South Korean film Haunted (2010), directed by Hideo Nakata of The Ring series fame, opened in the third spot with $1.9 million (?194 million) for Warner Bros. Japan.
Seiten no Hekireki (Bolt from the Blue) dropped to fourth place after bowing in second last weekend. The story of a magician, the film is based on a novel of the same name by Hitori Gekidan, who also directed and appears in the movie.
Bannou Kanteishi Q Mona Lisa no Hitomi (All-Round Appraiser Q: The Eyes of Mona Lisa), directed by Shunsuke Sato, opened in the fifth spot with $1.37 million (?140 million).
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 fell from fifth to eighth in its sixth week on the Japanese box-office charts.
