Jay Chandrasekhar, the director of cult comedy Super Troopers who in recent years has been working on TV’s The Goldbergs and Fresh Off the Boat, is returning to the feature world.
Chandrasekhar has signed on to direct Easter Sunday, a family comedy set up at Amblin Partners that is to star Jo Koy.
Rideback’s Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, who produced Aladdin and The Two Popes, are behind the project, which is eyeing a spring start of production.
Plot details are being kept in the basket but the project is based on the life experiences and stand-up comedy of Koy and will be set around a family gathering to celebrate Easter Sunday.
Ken Cheng (Wilfred, House of Chow) has written the script. Koy and Cheng are executive producing, along with Joe Meloche (Mr Iglesias), Jessica Gao (She-Hulk), Jimmy O. Yang (Space Force), Rideback’s Nick Reynolds, and Seth William Meier (A Dog’s Journey).
Amblin’s president of production Holly Bario and senior vp creative affairs Mia Maniscalco are overseeing the project for the company.
Chandrasekhar’s Troopers remains a beloved early aughts comedy that kickstarted a directing career. He helmed the 2005 big-screen remake of Dukes of Hazzard and most recently directed episodes of Goldbergs spin-off, Schooled.
He is repped by UTA and Sloss Eckhouse.
