While it remains unknown whether or not Will Smith will appear in the planned follow-up to 1996’s Independence Day (There are apparently two versions of the screenplay depending on whether or not he’s part of the project, although director Roland Emmerich has suggested that the actor is out of the movie’s price range these days), the true hero of the alien invasion movie looks set to return in the second installment with Jeff Goldblum saying that he’s been talking to producers about the project.
“I had a meeting and have been talking over the last several months or year with Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, the producer,” Goldblum told Time.com about the movie, “[They] say they have a part for me in what they hope will be a plan to make another one pretty soon.”
He isn’t taking that plan as a definite sign that alien network hacker David Levinson will definitely return in the second movie, tentatively scheduled for summer 2016, however. “‘Nebulous until actually’ is what that file is under,” he joked about his possible appearance. “They’re still talking about it and I’ve heard recent rumblings here and there about it, and ‘Oh, there’s a [script] coming in’ — maybe last weekend there was a script handed in, so it’s brewing.”
That’s still more positive than his prognostications for his reappearance in the Jurassic Park franchise, which returns to theaters with next year’s Jurassic World. “Well, people like that Jurassic Park thing,” Goldblum said. “I think they’re making another which I tell them, I’ll be first in line for, but am not in.” In the meantime, we can all hope that NBC signs on to make Law & Order: Civil Assets Forfeiture a reality.
