As world-class archer and marksman Hawkeye, Jeremy Renner takes aim with his bow.
By far the least-seen of Marvel Studios’ cinematic Avengers, it sounds like Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye might be about to step outside of the security of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in 2016 — well, almost.
Renner told Collider during a recent interview that “there are rumblings of [a Hawkeye appearance in] Captain America 3,” quickly adding, “I don’t know what’s going to happen there. I’ve got to find the time, man. I’m trying to stay home and I can’t.”
Of the six Avengers, only Hawkeye and Black Widow haven’t been featured in their own movies, although Black Widow was given a significant amount of screen time in this year’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. By comparison, Renner’s Hawkeye remains somewhat of an enigma, having debuted in a small, almost wordless cameo in 2011’s Thor and spent much of 2012’s Avengers as a mind-controlled thrall to Tom Hiddleston’s Loki. We know that he’s really good at shooting arrows and has some kind of past with the Black Widow, but beyond that — well, things are a little unclear, at least for now.

It’s possible that a Captain America appearance could build up his profile in a similar way to the spotlight The Winter Soldier gave Black Widow, but Renner wasn’t entirely joking when he said he’s “got to find the time” to make such an appearance happen.
When asked about his upcoming schedule, he said “I still have Mission: Impossible 5 that I’m going to shoot in a week. And then Bourne will happen next summer.” With Captain America 3 due in theaters May 6, 2016, the actor could have an even busier next 12 months or so — and audiences might want to prepare for a Renner-heavy couple of years at the box office.
Hawkeye next appears in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron.
