Last Train Home, a documentary that looks at Chinese peasants, and four other documentaries that focus on various hot-button topics from the American scene, have been nominated by the Directors Guild of America for its outstanding directorial achievement in documentary.
In addition to Lixin Fan‘s Train, the nominees are Charles Ferguson‘s Inside Job, a look at the 2008 financial crisis; Alex Gibney‘s Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer, which documents the former New York governor’s fall from grace; Davis Guggenheim‘s Waiting for ‘Superman,’ which examines the shortcomings of the public school system in the United States; and Tim Hetherington and Sebastian Junger‘s Restrepo, which follows a platoon taking part in the war in Afghanistan.

Gibney, who was nominated by the DGA for Taxi to the Dark Side in 2007, is a two-time DGA nominee. All the other directors are first-time nominees.
Inside Job, Restrepo and Superman are also on the shortlist of 15 films that are in contention for the feature documentary Oscar.
The winner of the DGA documentary award will be announced Jan. 29 at the 63rd annual DGA Awards Dinner at the Grand Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland.
