The news that Joe Hill was working with Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman to revive Tales from the Darkside for the CW raised a few eyebrows when it was announced — not least amongst those who thought the trio was hard at work on a movie version of Hill’s Locke & Key.
According to the writer, that adaptation of the IDW comic he co-created with artist Gabriel Hernandez is still on the cards — if potentially slowed down by the fact that there’s already a live-action version of the story out there: an unaired pilot from FOX, made in 2012.

Hill told MTV that Universal, the studio with the movie rights for the project, “wants to avoid spending $25 million on a movie, and then have FOX steal their thunder by releasing a three-year-old pilot [but] FOX wants to see some coin on all the money they sank into the pilot in the first place.” Additionally, he joked, “the lawyers all have to validate their salaries.”
This doesn’t mean that the Locke & Key movie will never happen, however. “Alex and Bob are the two most tenacious people I’ve ever met,” Hill said. “If anyone can see ‘Locke & Key’ through the contractual maze, and on into production, it’s them. Of course, all this could’ve been avoided if FOX had just made the series.”
