Universal Pictures has abruptly pulled Dark Castle Entertainment’s genre film The Loft from its release schedule two months ahead of the movie’s planned debut on Aug. 29, the beginning of Labor Day weekend.
Dark Castle chief and veteran producer Joel Silver brought the American-Belgian thriller with him from Warner Bros. when striking a new distribution deal with Universal. Dark Castle made the film, starring Karl Urban and James Marsden, with Anonymous Content.

Directed by Erik Van Looy, The Loft tells the story of five married men who share a penthouse loft where they can carry out affairs. But their fantasy turns into a nightmare when they discover the dead body of an unknown woman in the loft. Everyone becomes paranoid as they suspect one another of the crime.
Wentworth Miller, Rhona Mitra and Isabel Lucas also star.

Universal declined to comment on the reason for pulling the movie. No new date has been set. It’s the second summer title to be yanked after Warner Bros.’ Jupiter Ascending, although Jupiter is a far bigger movie.
The studio will use the Aug. 29 slot to open Legendary Pictures’ As Above/So Below, which had been set to debut in theaters Aug. 15. The psychological thriller, set in the catacombs beneath the streets of Paris, was directed by John Erick Dowdle.
