Joey King, Jack Kilmer and Andrea Savage are starring in Summer ’03, a coming-of-age indie written and being directed by newcomer Becca Gleason.
Paul Scheer, Erin Darke, Stephen Ruffin and June Squibb are also starring in the ensemble piece that began shooting Tuesday in Atlanta.
Inspired by true events, Summer ’03 is described as a dramedy reminiscent in tone to Little Miss Sunshine. It centers on a 16-year-old girl (King) and her extended family who are left reeling after her calculating grandmother (Squibb) unveils an array of secrets on her deathbed. The girl is left to navigate her nascent love life in the midst of a family crisis, leading to an unexpected conclusion.
New York-based Tadmor is fully financing the pic, with principals Gideon Tadmor and Jim Kaufman executive producing. Alexandre Dauman of Big Cat Productions is producing with Tadmor’s Eyal Rimmon. Racheli Sternberg is co-producer.
Gleason was a PA on TV’s Community and Rules of Engagement before writing and directing the short film Molly that won LACMA’s Young Director Night competition. She also is developing her short film WE as a pilot with SundanceNow.
Tadmor is a film finance, development and production company that aims to produce commercial, auteur-driven feature films and television projects. Among its credits are 2016’s Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer, the drama that starred Richard Gere, and Swiss Army Man, which starred Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe.
Big Cat Productions is a newly formed independent Los Angeles-based film and television production company founded by Dauman, who was previously an exec at Ron Howard and Brian Grazer’s Imagine Entertainment, where his work included the upcoming Tom Cruise thriller American Made.
King, who has appeared in Independence Day: Resurgence and on FX’s Fargo, is repped by UTA, Industry Entertainment and Coast to Coast Talent.
Kilmer, the son of actor Val Kilmer, has appeared in The Nice Guys and The Stanford Prison Experiment. He is repped by CAA and Principato Young Entertainment.
UTA-repped Scheer, who appears on Veep and Fresh Off the Boat, will next be seen in The Disaster Artist.
Squibb, who was nominated for an Oscar for her work in Alexander Payne’s Nebraska, is repped by Martin Gage.
Gleason is repped by ICM Partners and James Engle at Echo Lake.
