Captain America and Iron Man may have finally met their match with John Wick.
John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum is tracking for an impressive opening in the $35 million-$40 million range, with some box office experts saying that it could reach even higher. Parabellum is eyeing a higher opening than the franchise’s 2014 original ($14.4 million) and 2017’s Chapter Two ($30.4 million).
The third installment in the Lionsgate action series will likely be the first film to beat out Avengers: Endgame for the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office. The Marvel title is entering its fourth weekend in theaters and is tracking to add around $30 million to its current $2.5 billion global box office haul.
Last weekend, Endgame snagged another $61.3 million, topping Legendary and Warner Bros.’ new release Detective Pikachu. which bowed with $58 million in North American ticket sales.
Also opening this weekend is Universal’s A Dog’s Journey. The follow-up to A Dog’s Purpose will debut in approximately 3,200 theaters, with a projected domestic box office of $10 million to $12 million.
A Dog’s Journey — from Amblin Entertainment and Reliance Entertainment in association with Walden Media and Alibaba Pictures — sees the return of beloved family dog Bailey (voiced by Josh Gad), who comforts and protects his owner as he is reincarnated time and time again. Directed by Gail Mancuso, the family film is based on the best-selling novel by W. Bruce Cameron and stars Dennis Quaid and Betty Gilpin.
The weekend’s other new offering is the YA adaptation The Sun Is Also a Star, toplined by Yara Shahidi and Riverdale actor Charles Melton. The Warner Bros. and MGM film is tracking for a launch in the $6 million-$8 million range across 2,073 screens. Ry Russo Young directed the teen love story, which centers on Jamaica-born pragmatist Natasha Kingsley (Shahidi) as she meets the romantic Daniel Bae (Melton), who convinces her to spend the day traveling through New York City.
