Why so serious?
It seems Batman fans snapped harder than Bruce Wayne’s back on Tuesday when it was reported that Hangover director Todd Phillips was tapped to co-write and possibly helm a stand-alone Joker film that may give the maniacal villain a backstory.
The archenemies of Batman were trending on Twitter almost immediately and, for the most part, it appeared the reaction was pure ire. Fans always weigh in on new projects, but it usually seems like a mixed bag of positive and negative reactions, where as Tuesday’s news was very one-sided, almost mirroring the (ultimately unjustified) disgust years back when Ben Affleck was announced as the new Batman exactly four years ago to the day.
The anger came in multiple waves, the first being that fans didn’t seem to believe the director of the Hangover trilogy, Old School and Starsky & Hutch would be able to deliver the dark and complicated character.
The next wave of bitterness seemed to stem from fans not wanting a Joker origin story, many commenting that the character works best because his life before the makeup and mayhem is a complete mystery. Those arguing that point highlighted Heath Ledger’s interpretation of the villain in 2008’s The Dark Knight, where the character’s backstory kept changing depending on who he was tormenting.
Finally, there was concern among fans that Jared Leto will not be a part of the project. Many fans considered him and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn to be the best part of 2016’s Suicide Squad.
See some of the fan rage and sass below.
My guess: WB asked Phillips if he’d be interested in a DC movie and this is what he pitched. So they said,”Umm, sure. Try it.” #Joker

We do not need a Joker movie.

The whole point of the Joker is pure sociopathic chaos. He’s everything Bruce is scared to see in himself.

Please don’t make the #Joker movie and origin story. He’s not supposed to have an origin story!

There’s plenty of arguments for how a Joker movie could work, but in the end it humanizes him and that’s not a Joker I want tbh.

200 years from now some people still lamenting over how great Ledger’s Joker performance was and there will never be a better one. Big yawn.
