Sony Pictures Virtual Reality, Madison Wells Media subsidiary Reality One and VRX Networks have reached an agreement to produce and distribute VR experiences for select Sony films, expanding SPVR’s in-home and location-based VR efforts. The first project in the agreement will be a VR experience based on Sony’s upcoming Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, followed by one based on Sony Pictures Animation’s Hotel Transylvania 3, which opens in 2018.
With a debut to coincide with the Dec. 20 film release, Jumanji: The VR Adventure lets fans control their characters and build a team to set out to lift the curse of Jumanji while outwitting evil henchmen and evading dangerous wildlife.
The experience will be available at VRX Networks’ VR kiosks in movie theaters and shopping malls. The company has 50 locations in the U.S. and U.K., with plans to expand to South America, Asia and Australia in advance of the Jumanji release.
“When it comes to VR, we’ve found that, in addition to great in-home experiences, there’s a real opportunity for location-based entertainment. VRX Networks is a great partner for us to broaden out our distribution on this channel,” said Jake Zim, senior vp virtual reality at Sony Pictures Entertainment.
SPVR and Reality One will co-produce the new VR experiences, which will also be available in-home on PlayStation VR, Steam, Viveport and the Oculus Store.
This is the latest in a series of deals to produce immersive content based on Sony’s intellectual property. SPVR first partnered with Reality One in 2016 on projects including Passengers: Awakening VR Experience. Other Sony efforts included teaming up with The Void to launch Ghostbusters: Dimension.
