Amadeus Film Still - H 2014
Courtesy Everett CollectionKarel Cerny, who received an Academy Award for best art direction-set direction for his work on Milos Forman’s 1984 best picture winner Amadeus, has died. He was 92.
Cerny died Friday in the Czech Republic city of Tabor, his son-in-law, Lubomir Nezbeda, told Czech News Agency CTK.
Amadeus, the story of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, collected eight Oscars from 11 nominations, with Forman winning for best director and F. Murray Abraham taking the best actor prize. Much of the film was shot in Prague, and Cerny shared his Oscar with Patrizia von Brandenstein.
A native of Plzen, the Czech Republic, Cerny also collaborated with his countryman Forman on the films Black Peter (1964), Loves of a Blonde (1965) and The Fireman’s Ball (1967).
He won the Czech Lion film prize for career achievement in 2013.
