For those concerned that Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy trailer teased a fight between the movie’s two female leads in its trailer, Karen Gillan, who plays villainous Nebula in the summer space opera, wants to reassure you. “Theres a big, girlie fight sequence,” she admitted, “but it’s not that girlie.”
“They made sure there weren’t any nice pirouettes or anything like that,” Gillan said of her fight with Zoe Saldana‘s Gamora, a scene that she described as “the integral one for my character, because it’s not just a physical battle.” Instead, she said, the relationship between Nebula and Gamora “goes very deep, and there’s a huge history between them. So there’s a lot more to it than just the physical.”

That’s potentially a good thing for Gillan, who told MTV that Saldana had the edge in that area. “She’s really amazing at all of that stuff. She barely required any rehearsal, she was like, ‘I can do this.’ I required two months of rehearsals every day that I wasn’t shooting because I looked like spaghetti when I started.”
Gillan promised that Guardians marked a “new direction” for Marvel Studios because of the tone of the movie. “It’s really, really funny,” she said. “It’s not taking itself seriously at all.” Not that that necessarily extends to the characters within the movie. “Okay, so Nebula does not find herself funny,” Gillan said, adding “I find her hilarious.”
Guardians of the Galaxy opens August 1.
