COLOGNE, Germany – The Karlovy Vary international film festival has unveiled the competition line up for its 47th edition and it is a typical mix of veteran and up-and-coming art house directors.
Among the familiar faces are Polish director Jan Jakub Kolski (Pornografia), who comes to Karlovy Vary with To Kill a Beaver, the story of a paranoid war veteran who tries to shut himself off from the world; and Italy’s Marco Tullio Giordana (Once You Are Born You Can No Longer Hide), who brings his latest, The Italian Conspiracy, a reconstruction of the still-unsolved terrorist attack in Milan in 1969. Other veterans in the line up this year are Czech helmer Marek Najbrt, who brings Polski to the 2012 Karlovy Vary festival and the Iranian director Ali Mosaffa, who returns to Karlovy Vary with The Last Step. The drama features Iranian actress Leila Hatami of Oscar-winner A Separation.
Karlovy Vary’s competition line-up this year includes four first-timers: Ektoras Lygizos from Greece, whose Boy Eating the Bird’s Food is said to be a radically experimental film in the vein of recent Greek titles Dogtooth and Attenberg; Austrian director Huseyin Tabak, who arrives with his debut, Your Beauty Is Worth Nothing…; Japan’s Tatsuya Yamamoto, who will premiere the existential ballad Kamihate Store; and the Mexican filmmaker Lucia Carreras, the co-screenwriter of Cannes Camera d’Or winner Leap Year (2010), who enters the race for Karlovy Vary’s Crystal Globe with her first feature as director, Nos Vemos Papa.
The 47th Karlovy Vary international film festival runs June 29 – July 7.
