Kevin Smith on Thursday celebrated his first birthday since suffering a massive heart attack in late February, and he marked the occasion with a classic joke from the film that kicked off his career, Clerks.
Along with his social media message, Smith shared a photo of himself leaning against the store in New Jersey where Clerks was filmed.
“Today, August 2nd, 2018, I am 48 years old,” began the Chasing Amy director. “This is me leaning against the wall that changed my life. Speaking of life, I almost didn’t make it out alive this year. So in the words of the great Dante Hicks ‘I’m not even supposed to be here today!'”
Since suffering his heart attack, Smith completely changed his lifestyle and began exercising and eating healthy. He has shared numerous pictures of himself in the past months, having slimmed down considerably.
As for birthday presents, Smith asked for just one thing.
“If you’re looking to get me a cheap but meaningful gift? Help me green light my new show #hollyweed,” Smith wrote.
Smith previously described the show as “Clerks in a weed store mixed with the heart of Chasing Amy and Zack and Miri Make a Porno!“
