Inside Out accounted for 35.3 percent of the market share for the three-day weekend, according to the Korean Film Council’s KOBIS database. Since debuting in second place last week, the Pixar film has earned a cumulative $14.2 million. It is handled by Walt Disney Company Korea in the country.
Inside Out has switched spots with the local summer blockbuster Northern Limit Line, which had been going back and forth between first and second places for the past three weeks. The much buzzedabout, crowd-funded 3D film took 19.2 percent of the weekend revenue for a total of about $37 million.
In terms of admissions, by which local industry observers rank box-office scores, the maritime actioner about a 2002 battle against North Korean patrol boats has drawn 5.85 million admissions — making it the most successful of all Korean titles released so far this year. It is distributed by Next Entertainment World.
Universal Pictures International Korea’s Pixels attracted 15.2 percent of box-office revenue this weekend to land in the third place, bringing in a gross total of $3.3 million for its opening weekend.
Animated features have fared well in Korea in recent years, with Disney’s Frozen breaking several local records last year to become one of the most-watched theatrical releases ever in the country.
Next in fourth place was Terminator Genisys with a 9.6 percent share of box office. Though the Lotte Entertainment title has steadily descended in the ranks since debuting in first place on July 3, the film is one of the year’s top 10 films with over 3 million admissions.
A second Universal title, Insidious: Chapter 3, came next in the fifth spot by taking 8.3 percent of the share. The horror flick rose one spot from last week for cumulative revenue of about $4.4 million.
