‘Leftovers’ Actress Margaret Qualley in Talks to Join Adam Wingard’s ‘Death Note’ (Exclusive)

Margaret Qualley, who co-stars on HBO’s The Leftovers, is in negotiations to play the female lead in Warner Bros.’ horror movie project Death Note.

Adam Wingard, the filmmaker behind The Guest and You’re Next, is directing the feature, which will star Nat Wolff (Paper Towns).

The story, set in major metropolitan American city, centers on a student who discovers a supernatural notebook that allows him to kill anyone by writing the victim’s name, who then decides to cleanse the world of whom he deems evil. As the student is tracked by a reclusive police officer, a cat-and-mouse game ensues.

Jeremy Slater (Fantastic Four) wrote the more recent draft of the script.

Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Jason Hoffs and Masi Oka are producing Death Note, which is eyeing a production start in spring 2016.

The part could be a coup for Qualley, a fast-moving up-and-comer who made her debut with 2013’s Palo Alto before nabbing the part of Justin Theroux’s daughter in Leftovers. Her only other feature credit is The Nice Guys, Shane Black’s recently wrapped crime thriller starring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe.
