They’ve faced off alien invaders and hordes of killer robots, but now Earth’s Mightiest Heroes have to face their greatest challenge: saving the day when they only have cute little claws for hands. Although, as the first trailer for Lego Marvel’s Avengers makes clear, that’s not going to stop the Hulk from smashing.
Based on the first Avengers movie, the video game — to be released this winter — allows players the chance to take on the forces of Loki and the Chitauri in the Battle for New York, with the trailer recreating recognizable shots from Joss Whedon‘s first outing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
As is the norm with TT Games’ Lego games, there are also moments of self-aware humor puncturing the drama on offer: in this case, the Hulk pausing to take a selfie in the middle of the battle. (Also, let’s just take a moment to appreciate how oddly Mark Ruffalo-like Lego Bruce Banner is; the other heroes look pretty generic, but somehow the glance we get of Lego Banner is curiously lifelike.)
The trailer ends with a tease that there’ll be more than just a re-creation of the first Avengers movie on offer in the game, with a Lego Ultron briefly appearing before the tagline “Coming This Winter.” Age of Legtron, anyone?
Lego Marvel’s Avengers will be released for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation4, PlayStation3, PlayStationVita, WiiU, Nintendo 3DS and Windows PC later this year. Watch the trailer below.
