The ominous trailer for The Loneliest Planet, a character drama co-starring Gael Garcia Bernal and Hani Furstenberg, has debuted online.
Bernal and Furstenberg portray an engaged couple who encounter violence while backpacking through the visually people-less terrain of the ex-Soviet republic of Georgia; one particular incident involving a trio of peasants and an automatic weapon dramatically changes the dynamic of their relationship. (Note the trailer’s tagline: “What would you do if the one you love became a stranger?” Also, the gunshot sounds.)

The film, which was acquired by Sundance Selects and premiered at this year’s Locarno Film Festival in Italy, is the second effort from Russian-American filmmaker Julia Loktev following 2006’s well-received Day Night Day Night.
In a THR review, film critic Neil Young called Loneliest Planet “patience-testing” but said it had “some limited commercial prospects thanks to the presence of Mexico’s international art-house heartthrob Gael Garcia Bernal in one of the small handful of speaking parts. Not that there’s very much dialogue in this steadily taxing analysis of a relationship imperilled by communication breakdowns.”
The movie hits theaters in limited release Aug. 24.
