The Look of Silence was named the best documentary at the 31st Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday.
The documentary film beat out Best of Enemies, Heart of a Dog, Meru and The Russian Woodpecker. It is the companion film to Joshua Oppenheimer’s Oscar-nominated documentary The Act of Killing.
“Thank you to our Indonesian crew who have to remain anonymous for their safety but who helped us with The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence,” said the doc’s producer Signe Byrge Sorensen who accepted the award with Oppenheimer and Adi Rukun.
The awards were handed out in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica at a ceremony hosted by Silicon Valley‘s Kumail Nanjiani and Saturday Night Live‘s Kate McKinnon.
