After being essentially invisible inside fandom for decades — and, latterly, derided for being “fake geek girls” by a vocal fanboy minority — the female fandom demographic has become increasingly important in genre circles over the last few years. The latest market to shift towards that demo is monthly subscription services, with Loot Crate announcing LOOT4FANGIRLS, a new partnership between the nerd-friendly platform and fashion brand Her Universe.
The new limited-edition mystery crate — which will feature characters from Marvel, DC Entertainment, Star Trek and The Walking Dead — will contain five items, including a fangirl-friendly, licensed exclusive from Espionage Cosmetics and an exclusive dress from Her Universe, available in sizes Small-3XL. Other items include an action figure and what’s currently being described as “a killer accessory.” Details about the contents of the box will be revealed at the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con, set to run July 21-24.
In a statement, Loot Crate CEO Chris Davis said that LOOT4FANGIRLS allows the company to tap “into the underserved market of fangirls, which is rapidly expanding and changing the landscape of the industry,” adding that the partnership with Her Universe — the geek-centric fashion line founded by voice actor Ashley Eckstein — sees Loot Crate “furthering its commitment to serving all genres and genders in the world of fandom.”
This is far from the first targeted crate created by the company, which launched in 2012; other offerings include crates based around specific franchises including Star Wars and Ghostbusters, as well as crates for anime, gaming and other sub-genre and media. With more than 600,000 subscribers in 35 countries, Loot Crate continues to grow; it raised $18.5 million in Series A funding, it announced last month.
The LOOT4FANGIRLS crate will be available for purchase online at Loot Crate’s official site starting July 18, with a limited number of crates also available for purchase in person at Loot Crate’s booth at Comic-Con.
