Fear the wrath of Zooey Deschanel.
Los Angeles Times writer Patt Morrison learned that lesson the hard way when she called the actress a “snobby cow” after hearing her comments about downtown Los Angeles during the BAFTA party for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge over the weekend.
Zooey Deschanel responded to Morrison’s piece with an open letter on her website claiming that she was misquoted and had made the comments in an attempt at humor.
“I am completely and utterly shocked that a professional journalist, whom I have never met, would take a partial quote out of context and use it as the basis for a misguided personal attack,” wrote Deschanel.

Now, in a response to Deschanel’s open letter, Morrison’s new piece takes on a gentler tone, describing Deschanel as “a talented and charming actress.” Morrison explains that she wrote her original post because she was so surprised at the comments that Deschanel had made.
While she doesn’t make an outright apology to the 500 Days of Summer star, Morrison attempts to end on a lighter note, writing “I hope Deschanel will head back to greater downtown L.A. one of these days. The vegetarian breakfasts at the Homegirl Cafe? I can’t recommend them enough.”
In the opening sentence of Morrison’s July 10 piece she called Deschanel a “snobby cow.” She went on to quote Deschanel as saying, “I just don’t want them to see the worst of L.A.”
“Of course there are thousands of down-and-out folks in downtown L.A. I cannot apologize enough to Ms. Deschanel that in some places, the sidewalks do not smell like Jo Malone candles,” Morrison wrote.
Deschanel, a native Angeleno, expressed her shock at Morrison’s attack, and wrote that she loves downtown Los Angeles, and has always said so.

“It’s hard for me to comprehend why you launched such a vile and toxic blow in my direction over a sentence fragment that you did not even hear for yourself,” she wrote.
“I do hope that in the future when writing about something, especially a human being, you will consider both the facts and context before publishing your opinion.”
