Lucy Liu, who has spent the last several years in television with such shows as Why Women Kill and Elementary, is heading to the big screen, joining the cast of New Line’s big-budget DC movie, Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
The Shazam! sequel once again stars Zachary Levi as the adult version of teenager Billy Batson (a reprising Asher Angel) who transforms into a superhero. David F. Sandberg is back as director.
Plot details of the Henry Gayden script are being kept in a cave off a subway tunnel, but New Line announced that Liu will play a villainess named Kalypso. The character is the second daughter of Atlas, one of the Titans of ancient Greece and one of the A’s in Shazam, acronym of ancient gods and heroes.
The character is also the sister to Hespera, the villain character that is being played by the already cast Helen Mirren.
Also on the call sheet is newcomer Rachel Zegler, the star of Steven Spielberg’s upcoming West Side Story.
Fury of the Gods is set for release on June 2, 2023, and begins shooting in May.
Liu starred in CBC’s Elementary from 2012 to 2019 opposite Jonny Lee Miller and then in Why Women Kill, created by Mark Cherry. Feature-wise, she last appeared in Netflix’s romantic comedy Set It Up with Zoey Deutch, Glenn Powell and Taye Diggs.
