For fans thinking that they already know about all of the spinoff prologues and prequels to Star Wars: The Force Awakens — which include prose novels and Marvel comic books — a line from Jedi master Yoda during The Empire Strikes Back is appropriate: “No. There is another.”
Launching today on the LINE Webtoon portal, Star Wars: Story Before The Force Awakens is a Korean webcomic by Hong Jacga that retells the events of the original trilogy of movies from the perspective of Luke Skywalker. That means more of Luke’s past on Tatooine — including his first meeting with Ben Kenobi — as well as other elements not seen in the movies themselves, all of which counts as Star Wars canon.
New installments of the series will be released every Thursday and Sunday via the LINE Webtoon site, as well as the LINE Webtoon app, available for iOS and Android devices.
In a statement announcing the launch, LINE Webtoon founder JunKoo Kim said: “Our fans in the United States are in for something special as they now have a chance to dive into the epic Star Wars story in a totally new way. … This immersive digital comic experience offers a brand-new experience for Star Wars fans and perfectly showcases the appeal of our digital storytelling format.”
