The Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild (MUAHS) Awards will be held Sunday at The Novo by Microsoft at L.A. Live. Here’s your tip sheet for the evening:
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them received three MUAHS nominations, leading the feature competition. Earning two apiece in features were La La Land; Nocturnal Animals; Zoolander 2; Doctor Strange; Hail, Caesar!; Loving; and Suicide Squad.
Of those films, only Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad — nominated by MUAHS in the categories for period and/or character makeup and special makeup effects — is also nominated for the Academy Award in makeup and hair styling. The pic is nominated for an Oscar alongside Star Trek Beyond, which has one MUAHS Award nomination for special makeup effects, and A Man Called Ove, which is Sweden’s foreign-language film Oscar nominee.
A year ago, Mad Max: Fury Road topped the MUAHS Awards’ feature competition, winning two trophies. It went on to the win the Oscar in the category.
Over this past weekend, Florence Foster Jenkins, which has one MUAHS mention, won the BAFTA for makeup and hair.
In all, MUAHS Awards will be presented in 23 categories honoring makeup artists and hair stylists in motion pictures, television, commercials and live theater. The complete list of nominees can be found here.
During Sunday’s ceremony, Ryan Murphy will be the Guild’s honorary artisan recipient, while Emmy-nominated makeup artist Leonard Engelman (Cher’s personal makeup artist for more than 30 years) and Oscar- and Emmy-nominated hairstylist Barbara Lorenz (La La Land) will receive lifetime achievement awards.
