Blue Fox Entertainment has taken worldwide sales rights to teen thriller Saving Zoe, while also picking up domestic distribution rights.
The film — based on the New York Times best-selling author Alyson Noel’s award-winning young adult novel — stars Vanessa Marano (Switched at Birth), Laura Marano (Austin & Ally), Giorgia Whigham (13 Reason Why), Ken Jeong (The Hangover), Michael Provost (Insatiable) and Nathaniel Buzolic (Hacksaw Ridge).
Jeffrey G. Hunt (The Vampire Diaries, Riverdale) directed Saving Zoe, which follows a teenage girl as she looks to discover the truth behind her sister’s murder in a story that hopes to bring to light how prevalent sex crimes and trafficking are online.
The film was produced by Studio71, with Hunt also serving as producer alongside the Marano sisters, plus their mother, Ellen Marano, and Michael Schreiber (Plus One). Brian J. Adams and LeeAnne H. Adams wrote the screenplay.
Blue Fox’s international sales team will begin introducing the film to buyers at the AFM, while the company’s domestic distribution arm is planning a 2019 theatrical release. The deal was negotiated by Blue Fox Entertainment’s Todd Slater with Paradigm’s Meghan Oliver negotiating on behalf of the filmmakers.
“When we optioned Alyson Noel’s book Saving Zoe ten years ago, we did it because as a mother, as a daughter, as a sister, and as women, we were incredibly moved by a powerful story. Now, a decade later, that same powerful story seems to be more relevant than ever,” said Ellen, Vanessa and Laura Marano in a statement. “We are ecstatic that Blue Fox was as moved today as we were all those years ago and are thrilled to be working with them. Together, we hope to share a film that we couldn’t be more proud of with the world.”
