LONDON — Marc Evans‘s Patagonia, a film the filmmaker shot in Welsh and Spanish languages, is this year’s British pick in this year’s foreign-language Oscar nomination chase.
The movie details the parallel story of a Welsh couple to travel to Argentina to iron out their relationship and the tale of an old Patagonian woman and her nephew who go to Wales in search of their family history.
The movie stars Matthew Rhys and pop star Duffy and continues a tradition of Welsh language projects entering the race for an Oscar foreign-language nomination slot.
Each year BAFTA puts out a call for entries to distributors, its membership and via BAFTA in Scotland and in Wales.
BAFTA’s Film Committee reviews any entries received and votes to decide which film to put forward.
The last project BAFTA put forward as the U.K.’s submission was Afghan Star in 2009/10.
Two previous Welsh language titles, Hedd Wynn in 1993 and Solomon and Gaenor in 1999, actually scored Oscar nomination berths, but the U.K. has never won the nod.
Evans’ movie was released by Verve Pictures.
