Sony Pictures Classics has closed a deal to acquire North American, German, U.K., Scandinavian, Eastern European and Russian rights to the Maya Forbes-helmed drama Infinitely Polar Bear.
One of the hottest Sundance titles going into the festival, the film premiered at Eccles Theatre on Jan. 18. Infinitely Polar Bear, which is seen as having awards-season potential, also was pursued by Roadside Attractions.

The dysfunctional family film stars Mark Ruffalo as a bipolar father put in charge of taking care of his two young, precocious daughters after their mother (Zoe Saldana) leaves to pursue her MBA in New York. Imogene Wolodarsky and Ashley Aufderheide co-star.
Inspired by writer-director Forbes’ own childhood, the film marks her directorial debut while she began her career on HBO’s The Larry Sanders Show and has since written for numerous TV shows and big-budget films including Monsters vs Aliens.
“I am thrilled,” Forbes said. “Sony Pictures Classics consistently releases the movies I want to see. The film connected deeply with audiences at Sundance and I think (SPC’s) Michael (Barker), Tom (Bernard) and Dylan (Leiner) have a terrific plan to expand on that experience. Infinitely Polar Bear could not have found a better home.”
Added SPC in a statement: “We are excited and pleased to be bringing Maya Forbes’ accomplished, deeply moving and joyous autobiographical story to the public.”
Wally Wolodarsky, Benji Kohn, Bingo Gubelmann, Sam Bisbee and Galt Niederhoffer produced the film. J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk, Austin Stark, Ruth Mutch, Jackie Kelman Bisbee exec produced.
ICM Partners and attorney Chris Tricarico of Tricarico Chavez repped the filmmakers. Forbes, Wolodarsky and Ruffalo also are repped by Brillstein Entertainment Partners.
The Solution Entertainment Group is handling all remaining international territories for the film.
