Steven O’Dell has been promoted to president of Sony Pictures Releasing International. He steps into the post that had been held by Mark Zucker, who is retiring after 36 years in the industry and 27 years with Sony.
Zucker, who joined Sony’s TriStar Pictures as a vp marketing and distribution in 1984, took over the reigns of its international distribution operation in 2001 as senior exec vp at SPRI. He was promoted to president of distribution in 2006 and was named president in 2008.
Working with Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution at Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Jeff Blake, chairman of Sony Pictures worldwide marketing and distribution, Zucker built up an international distribution team that has collected more than $1 billion at the international box office in 11 of the past 12 years, including 2011. During Zucker’s tenure, SPRI has fielded 36 $100 million-plus releases and amassed more than $14 billion in box office grosses.
O’Dell, who joined Sony in 2005 as a vp, was promoted to senior vp in 2009. Most recently, he has been responsible for overseeing Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain, Portugal and Scandinavia. Prior to joining Sony, O’Dell began working in 1994 with United International Pictures in Central America and the Caribbean. He held management posts for UIP in Chile, Austria, Brazil and Mexico. He returned to the U.S. in 2001 to join consultancy Nadia Bronson & Associates.
“Mark is one of the most highly regarded, well-respected and well-liked executives in our company and industry,” Bruer said. “We are sorry to see him go, but we are happy for him — he’s worked hard for this moment. We all dream of retiring when we’re on top, but Mark has been on top for many years — we are thrilled to see him enjoy this next chapter. We also are thrilled to have Steven as our new international president. Steven is innovative, collaborative, and a strong leader. His promotion is well-earned and he is ready to step into this important role.”
