Just in time for his starring role on the big screen, Marvel’s Winter Soldier is returning to the comic book stands in a new five-issue series, Winter Soldier: The Bitter March, by current Captain America writer Rick Remender and artist Roland Boschi.
The new series will take place before the character’s debut during Ed Brubaker‘s Captain America run, and feature the Winter Soldier in the days in which he was an assassin for the Russians. “I think that, for me, that was when the character was the most interesting and it’s not entirely explored,” Remender told Marvel.com. “This is a look at who he was [over] many decades during the Cold War as well as establishing what a proficient and terrifying spy/assassin he was and is, and at the same time, to set up a lot of what I’m going to be doing in [the ongoing Captain America series] with him.”

The Bitter March will be the third time the character has been given his own book — not counting the period in which he filled in for Captain America in that series — following the 2007 Winter Soldier: Winter Kills one-shot and the ongoing monthly series launched last year, which was canceled this June. The new series launches February 2014, two months ahead of the cinema release of Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
