Paolo Rivera/Marvel EntertainmentHe’s been a villain, a hero, an antihero and, thanks to movie portrayals by Sir Ian McKellen and Michael Fassbender, a cinematic heartthrob. In 2014, however, Marvel Entertainment’s Magneto will become something he’s never been in his 50-year history: the star of his own ongoing comic book.
Announced today by USA Today, Magneto will see the character leave the Uncanny X-Men to seek out future threats to mutantkind before they can cause trouble for any of the many X-teams in the Marvel Universe.

“He’s standing up for his people — the mutants,” explained writer Cullen Bunn. “He refuses to let them suffer as he has seen others suffer. But he’s taken steps to protect mutants that can only be seen as evil. His ideals are often ‘good’ while his methods are not. … He might stand by the heroes from time to time, but he’s terrifying for the average person.”
The series will also focus on Magneto’s origins, as well as his relationship to Charles Xavier — as well as his estranged children, the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver — just in time for next year’s X-Men: Days of Future Past movie. “They are a big part of what makes Magneto who he is,” according to the writer.
Illustrated by Gabriel Hernandez Walta, Magneto launches in March.
