Alex Ross/Marvel EntertainmentIn the same week that DC Entertainment relaunches its superhero line, details are starting to emerge about Marvel Entertainment’s own comic book relaunch. The publisher is promising 55-60 series being released as part of the “All-New, All-Different Marvel” promotion this fall.
While specifics were not offered — likely being held back for later announcements, or saved for All-New, All-Different Marvel Previews, a 64-page release to be available exclusively in comic stores July 1 — editor-in-chief Axel Alonso told Mashable that there will be a new Wolverine, Spider-Man and Hulk as part of the new line, with the latter being “certain to cause debate.”
Talking to USA Today, Alonso said that the publisher “put the onus on the creators to come up with big changes in the lives of our characters,” adding that fans will see “new characters inhabiting those roles, and new characters dealing with profound changes in the relationships with others around them and where they live.”
Not everything is being recreated from the ground up: the female Thor will make it into the new-look Marvel line, as will Sam Wilson’s Captain America. (The preview image released by Marvel shows the aged Steve Rogers, suggesting that the current Captain America storyline will continue in the relaunch; also present are Ms. Marvel, the Black Panther and the Avengers’ Vision, among many other characters.)
The new series will roll out over a three- to four-month period, according to the publisher, and is intended to act as a jumping-on point for those who enjoy Marvel’s movies and animated series, but have been put off by more than five decades worth of continuity in the comic books before now. The relaunch, which mirrors DC’s New 52 reboot from 2011, isn’t as sweeping as the title suggests, however; Alonso said that the new world “resembles the Marvel Universe that 60 years of readers have come to love.”
Expect more details of All-New, All-Different Marvel across the summer.
