Courtesy of Principal Communications GroupWe know, by now, that Marvel has mystery movies on the release schedule as far out at 2017, but it turns out that the Marvel Studios Master Plan goes even further into the future. In an interview with WIRED, studio president Kevin Feige estimates that they’re thinking eight years out at least. “I could arguably say what we’re planning for the year 2021,” he teased. “Will that happen? I don’t know. But what we planned for 2015 in 2006 is happening.”
While Feige didn’t actually go as far as to actually name any future projects that we don’t already know about, he did demonstrate that he knows what’s at stake in the more immediate future for the studio. “We knew that if Avengers was going to work, the movies had to stand alone,” he said. “Now we have to prove to the studio that we’re more than just these five characters, these five franchises.”

That means that a lot is riding on Guardians of the Galaxy, which is currently shooting in London. Should that movie succeed, there’s a (figurative and fictional) universe of additional science fiction characters, concepts and alien races for Marvel to spin out into their own features and explore. If it fails, well, there’s always a plan B; WIRED mentions the potential for a “psychedelic, magical” take on Doctor Strange with a supporting cast that could be spun off into another Earth-bound superhero team movie.
