Matt Damon showed up on Tuesday night’s Tonight Show sporting a sling on his left arm, likely surprising many who saw the actor elegantly dressed in a tux (and sling-free) during Sunday night’s Golden Globes, where he was a presenter and the subject of a few onstage jokes and camera cutaways.
Damon, who was on the show to promote his upcoming movie The Monuments Men, told Jay Leno the details of his injury and how he felt about all that Globes ribbing.
It turns out that Damon broke his collarbone three or four weeks ago after he took up mountain biking and fell over a bunch of rocks.

The actor explained the he was riding down a hill, and he didn’t see a group of boulders buried under some dried leaves.
“I just hit it and literally the bike stopped, and I didn’t. I just kept going,” he explained, gesturing that he fell over the handlebars.
After some prodding from Leno, Damon admitted he might have been showing off a bit to the friend he was biking with.
“Yeah, like ‘Watch this move and these turns.’ And ‘Watch me hit this rock!'” he said, laughing.

So why didn’t he wear his fashionable sling to the Golden Globes?
“I had that beautiful tuxedo on, and I didn’t want to ruin it,” Damon said, adding that his wife helped him get dressed.
But he pointed out that he put the sling on for the after-parties, “so that no one came up and gave me the hail-fellow-well-met slap on the shoulder.”

During the show, Damon was the subject of a few jokes, including hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler calling him a “garbage person” and a bit with Melissa McCarthy in which the actress thought she was Damon.
While he said he wasn’t aware that he would be the subject of that much attention, he praised Fey and Poehler for the job as hosts.
“I love those guys, they did such a good job,” Damon said. “I thought that was one of the best ones I’d ever seen.”
