Matthew Vaughn and his MARV Films have picked up the movie rights to ghostgirl, a YA series by Tonya Hurley.
Vaughn will produce the adaptations with marketing-executive-turned-producer Valerie Van Galder.
ghostgirl is a school set satire telling the tale of one Charlotte Usher, a girl who feels invisible and then one day dies after choking on a gummy bear. The books detail her new undead life and her unwillingness to let go of her very much alive high school crush.
The books are New York Times best sellers, and the first novel was published in more than 20 languages in nearly 30 countries. In Latin America, the ghostgirl series has sold more than 1 million copies and in some cases is second in popularity only to the Twilight series of books.
Said Van Galder, “Five years ago I spotted ghostgirl on a shelf, and I was immediately drawn to everything about it. Tonya Hurley and I formed an instant kinship as both relate to outsiders and are immensely grateful we did not peak in high school. Tonya spent those five years telling Charlotte Usher’s story in five separate books, building a passionate and dedicated fan base who are now eagerly awaiting this next chapter in Charlotte’s afterlife.”
Hurley previously co-created the Olsen Twins ABC Family show So Little Time.
Van Galder and Vaughn first worked together on Snatch, which she was responsible for bringing to Sony’s Screen Gems label. She was also a consultant on Vaughn’s Kick Ass in 2009.
Vaughn next has Kingsman: The Secret Service opening Feb. 15.
