For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Case in point: following the release of a villain-centric teaser poster for this summer’s X-Men: Apocalypse, now the good guys show up to save the day. Or, at least, defend it.
The new image, titled “Defend,” offers up the latest cinematic incarnation of the X-Men, which brings in newcomers Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-Mcphee) and Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) alongside Evan Peters’ Quicksilver, Nicholas Hoult’s Beast and Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique. Sitting above them all, the newly bald Professor Charles Xavier (James McAvoy).
In addition to revealing the new version of the ever-shifting X-Men line-up — in 2014’s Days of Future Past, only Xavier and Beast were actually members of the team — the “Defend” poster offers a chance for fans to speculate on what, exactly, it means that Jean Grey’s pose echoes Magneto’s in the “Destroy” image, and just why Lana Condor’s Jubilee is missing from both images.
Directed by Bryan Singer and also starring Michael Fassbender and Oscar Isaac, X-Men: Apocalypse will hit theaters May 27.
