In the first trailer for the new mockumentary Cook Off!, Melissa McCarthy stars as a competitive baking contestant squaring off against a roster of quirky, offbeat characters.
The trailer begins with an announcer welcoming in throngs of bakers and spectators to an annual “cook off” in a Los Angeles apartment complex’s convention center. McCarthy, sporting a frizzled crop cut, red apron and baggy sweatshirt, arranges a pot of ingredients atop a stove as she is interviewed by a film crew. “My hands aren’t that clean, but it really cooks up nice,” she tells the camera.
Also on hand to show off their cooking skills are Wendi McLendon-Covey, wearing thick glasses and a thick Midwestern accent, Niecy Nash, who has a penchant for ladybugs that she displays on her manicured fingertips, and Diedrich Bader, the event’s first male contestant, who doesn’t take kindly to the term “idiot savant.”
Louie Anderson, Ben Falcone and Phil LaMarr also star in the upcoming film.
Co-directed by Cathryn Michon, who also stars in the film and co-wrote the script, and Guy Shalem, Cook Off! shares a familiar style with writer-director Christopher Guest’s send-ups of dog shows (2000’s Best in Show) and folk music (2003’s A Mighty Wind) with its mockumentary filmmaking style and cast of bizarre, charming characters.
Cook Off! opens nationwide on Nov. 17.
