The documentary will still have a limited opening in Los Angeles and New York to qualify for Academy Award consideration, but is postponing its wider opening to a date that will put it smack in the middle of the presidential primary season.
The film is being distributed by the still-unnamed new company that is being put together by former Radius heads Tom Quinn and Jason Janego and Alamo Drafthouse founder Tim League, who plan to launch the movie’s wide release in 300 to 400 theaters and then expand from there.
According to a rep for the distributors, the idea of moving the movie’s release came from Moore himself, who is planning a 50-state bus tour in support of the movie that will begin Jan. 4. In Where to Invade Next, Moore goes on a tour of Europe to look at socially progressive policies that the film implicitly argues the U.S. would be smart to adopt. The tour, plus the new opening date, could inject some of the topics the movie explores into the presidential race, since the film will be opening three days after the New Hampshire presidential primary.
Where to Invade Next has already made the shortlist of 15 documentary features that are hoping for an Oscar nomination when noms are announced Jan. 14. First, though, the film must begin an Academy-qualifying run by the end of the year, and so its distributors are planning to book it into two theaters in New York and one in Los Angeles on Dec. 23.
