Late Hungarian Director Miklos Jancso to Get Career Retrospective at Bergamo Fest

The 34^th Bergamo International Film Festival will pay tribute to the late Hungarian film director and screenwriter Miklos Jancso with a career retrospective.

Jancso achieved international acclaim in the mid 1960s onwards, with some of his best known works including The Round-Up (1965), The Red and the White (1967) and Red Psalm, which won him best director in Cannes in 1972. In total he was nominated five times for Cannes’ Palme d’Or.

Jancso‘ films often deal with themes of abuse of power in Communist-ruled Hungary. Known for his rich personal style, long sequential shots, spectacular landscapes and sometimes audacious camera moves, he is considered to be one of Hungary’s most accomplished directors. In 1990 he was honored with a career Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. He passed away in January, 2014 at age 92.

Bergamo International Film Festival runs March 5-13, 2016. The lineup will include 140 short and feature-length films with a focus on new trends from contemporary cinema as well as auteur cinema from film history. As usual, a main competition will feature alongside documentary, animation and preview sections. The fest will also feature art exhibitions, workshops and master classes to engage audience goers with festival guests.
